Learn to massage your own horse!
Would you like to improve your horses performance?
Would you like to have a positive effect on his health and well-being?
Does he seem stiff, cold-backed, or reluctant to work?
The benefits of massage are well documented, including reducing tension and tenderness, increasing length of stride, and improving performance. And as we all know, even without the evidence to back it up, massage ‘just feels good’!
‘Just wanted to say a BIG thank you for yesterday’s course, the feedback from my group was very positive and for me superb…love the handouts’ Debbie

- You, your horse, your yard, your course!
-
The Holistic Horse Help Horse Owners Massage Course is available to anyone with their own horse. Sue will work with you and your horse at your yard to offer your own personalised course, including a brief physiotherapy assessment of your horse to identify any problem areas that you might need to focus on. This course caters for between one and eight students with their own horses.
"I really didn't realise how much good massage and stretches could do until I tried it!" JR
- Not practical to hold the Horse Owners Massage Course at your yard?
-
If it is not practical for Sue to visit you and your horse for this course, then there is another option. The Horse Owners Massage Course is held at small number of venues throughout the UK, using horses provided by those venues. Dates and venues can be found here.
"Thankyou for the massage course today, really enjoyed the practical. I went straight home and practiced on my boy, he is sooo grateful to you for teaching me some new techniques, he totally went to sleep on me and his eyes were almost closed. I was surprised at how well he could do the side stretch of the front legs and will carry this on with the front stretch I already used. I will be using the schedule regularly and especially the pectoral bit before girthing up as it really got him to relax. Do let me know if you are doing any future courses." HL
- Course content
-
The course consists of some theory, some practical human to human work (learning the techniques with feedback from another person is an important part of developing the skills), learning about the muscles on the horse that you will be working with and chalking them onto the horse, and putting together a full simple routine for daily / weekly / monthly use with your own horse. There are comprehensive handouts, including laminated sheets (pictorial and written) to take in the stable with you while you are getting the hang of the routine, and close supervision offered throughout the course.
- Aims and objectives
-
This course aims to teach you a basic massage routine to use with your own horse, using proven techniques to help improve his health and performance.
This course is not designed to teach anyone to massage other people’s horses, or to give any qualification, although you do get a ‘Certificate or Attendance’ personally signed by Sue! - Course feedback
-
Feedback from people who have done the course has been excellent, with many people telling me that they are still using the massage regularly even if they did the course a long time ago.
"Hi Sue and Simon, wanted to say thanks for last Sunday's course. It was brilliant and with the practical sessions and handouts I already feel really confident working on my two horses. They both love the massage and stretches and are getting really good at the stretches already. Even George is managing to do the hind leg stretches and his 'shivering' is much less. He was able to do leg yielding today much more easily than ever before. Can you give me some guidance as to how to get some qualifications in horse massage, sports massage, stretches, etc as I'd really like to be able to work with other people's horses" AB
- Availability
-
Courses run on weekdays or weekends, and cater for between 1 and 8 students, each with their own horse. Costs can be found on the ‘Prices’ page.
- Facilities required
-
Facilities required are somewhere dry (and ideally warm!) where you can all sit to go through the theory and human to human side of things. You will also need access to clean, dry horses (1 per person).
You need to be able to draw on the horses with chalk - this is not in any way uncomfortable for the horses, but it can leave marks for a few days (although it is pavement chalk which is designed to wash off), especially on lighter coloured horses, so it's not a good idea if you're going to a show in the next few days (horses can be shared 1 between 2 people for chalking work if necessary). The horses need to be able to stand calmly (ideally tied up in stables) for the duration of the massage work. They need to be stabled or tied fairly close together (so that Sue can offer everyone close supervision).
